10 Ways to Naturally Reduce Stress

May 4th, 2008 by BetterLifeChoices

Stress causes more ailments and anxiety than any other condition, and is considered to be one of the major issues of modern-day life. We are working harder and living faster than ever before and this hectic pace, coupled with unresolved problems and pressures, simply increases stress levels. Although a little bit of stress is actually good for you, excessive stress isn’t and could raise your blood pressure and contribute to serious illnesses and conditions. So, what can you do to reduce stress?

Try the following tried and tested suggestions:

  1. No matter how busy you are, give yourself at least 10 minutes meditation time on a daily basis so that you can switch off and relax. Find yourself a quiet space where you won’t be disturbed. Switch off the phone, play a meditation tape or some relaxing music and focus on being still.
  2. Take up a stress-busting session of Tai Chi or Yoga. Both activities are well-known for their ability to combat stress. You’ll also enhance your overall health and fitness with regular practice too!
  3. Do a life audit! Look for ways that you can free-up more time so that you can improve your work-life balance.
  4. Make decisions that nurture you. Learn to say `no’ to stressful situations. Only take on what you feel you can cope with.
  5. Organise your day and make a priority list of things to do. The more organised and efficient you are, the less stressed you’ll be.
  6. Treat yourself to a relaxing aromatherapy massage. The pure essential oils will lighten your spirit and the massage will help ease any muscular knots and tension caused by stress.
  7. Ensure that you eat nutritiously and drink plenty of water. Good eating habits will help maintain a healthy outlook and your water intake is vital to bring about clarity of mind.
  8. Feeling particularly stressed? Relax with a cup of green tea! Green tea is rich in anti-oxidants and is also renowned for its calming properties.
  9. Spend time with those you love. Relax, play games, walk and just focus on the present moment. Let past or future issues go for now and just enjoy being in the present.
  10. When was the last time you laughed out loud? If you have to think about it, then it’s too long! Laughter is fantastic medicine for beating stress, and you should laugh every single day. Watch one of your favourite comedy films or have a family laughter hour. It’s a fantastic way to spend some time and you’ll feel tension and stress just slip away.
